Introduction
In previous sections, we talked about Consciousness, Kosha, Prana, Chakra and Nadis in isolation. But in the human mechanism they all work in coordination to awaken Kundalini .
Let, us understand how all of these work together to enable awakening of Kundalini Shakti.
What is Kundalini Shakti?
MahaPrana or Cosmic Energy enters the fetus on 49th day of Pregnancy as claimed by some Buddhist Texts. It aids in intelligent development of the fetus to a fully grown human infant in the womb.
After birth, MahaPrana no longer requires activation and lies dormant at its seat, the Mooladhara Chakra. We know it as Kundalini Shakti as it coils up like a snake.
Once awakened from its dormant state, it reportedly rises through the chakras along the path Sushumna Nadi. This leads to spiritual awakening and higher consciousness.
Yoga and Meditation techniques enable the rise of Kundalini Shakti or Cosmic Energy. And, it unites with Shiva or Cosmic Consciousness at the Sahasrara Chakra.
It achieves a superconscious state where one experiences oneness with every object in the universe.
The image of a snake rising, seen in many old temples often represents the Kundalini Shakti rising up.
Psychosomatism
Human Beings are Psychosomatic. This means whatever happens in the Physical Body has an equivalent effect on the Mental & Energy Bodies and vice versa.
Blockage in the flow of Prana in Physical Body implies a corresponding blockage in the flow of Prana in the Mental & Energy Bodies as well.
Similarly, negative thoughts & emotions affect flow of Prana in the Mental body. This causes obstruction in the flow of Prana in the Physical & Energy Bodies as well.
This would explain as to why Psychological Problems are often accompanied with Physical Ailments. Due to depletion of Prana in the Energy body, the person tends to become weaker over a period of time .
Remember, it is the Energy Body which powers the Physical Machine.
To summarize, the entire system of Koshas interlink with the human mechanism. They work in a coordinated manner and changes in one affects the others.
MahaPrana vs Prana
Prana is the Life Energy. And, one needs to understand clearly the difference between MahaPrana & Prana.
MahaPrana or Cosmic Energy is present in every piece of creation. Entire creation is just modifications of the dual principle of Consciousness & Energy.
In the Human Mechanism, it splits into Chitta Shakti (Consciousness) & Prana Shakti (Life Energy).
This Prana Shakti within a human being is termed as Individual Prana or just Prana. With techniques of Hatha Yoga & Meditation, practitioners harness Prana to awaken the Kundalini Shakti.
Hatha Yoga Practices such as Asana, Pranayama, Mudra & Bandha purify Prana & the entire Nadis network. This raises the quantum as well as quality of Prana.
This finer quality of Prana transmits to other Koshas to open deeper layers of body for higher spiritual experiences.
Integration of Chakras
What is the function of Chakras in the integrated working of human mechanism?
Consider the following table of Chakras again.

Each Chakra associates with a Kosha. So, if there is awakening of Prana in the Annamaya Kosha there is a corresponding awakening of Prana in Mooladhara Chakra as well and Vice Versa.
This is what it means by Integration. Awakening Prana in one area facilitates awakening & transmission of Prana in the entire human mechanism.
One should awaken Kundalini Shakti only when the body has fully prepared itself. The body should be free from any Karmic Blockages which present resistance to the flow of Prana.
Once you clear the Nadis for flow of Prana, it travels from Mooladhara Chakra to Ajna Chakra through Pingala Nadi.
Through Yoga techniques, practitioners raise Prana to sufficiently high energy and generate intense heat in the system.
This leads Ajna Chakra (command center) to issue a signal back to Mooladhara Chakra (generating station) to awaken the Kundalini Shakti.
At this point, the individual awakens the Kundalini Shakti and realizes MahaPrana in themselves.
Key Takeaways
- After birth, Cosmic Energy becomes dormant at Mooladhara Chakra and is called Kundalini Shakti
- Yoga & Meditation techniques aim to harness Individual Prana to awaken the Kundalini Shakti
- Transmission of Prana to other Chakras is stopped because of Karmic Blockages at other Chakras and network of Nadis
- Ajna Chakra sends a signal back to Mooladhara Chakra to awaken the Kundalini Shakti to rise up
