I am a follower of Sadhguru and an ISHA Meditator. I have started the website to explain the Science of Yoga in a concise and sequential manner.

Human Beings: A Smart Machine

Human Mechanism

Recall, from my previous article that the Biological Machine called Human Beings has Five Koshas or Sheaths of Body.

The outermost layer is the Physical Body or the Annamaya Kosha which is visible to us through naked eye. It is like the hardware of the computer.

The second layer is the Energy Body or the Pranamaya Kosha. Prana, the INTELLIGENT Energy, flows more or less like Electricity flows in the circuit of hardware. It is the Prana which powers the hardware – the Physical Body.

The third layer is the Mental Body or the Manomaya Kosha which is also a subtle body. It is the INTELLIGENT body and gives instructions for efficient functioning of the Physical Body. Again it is the Prana which powers the subtle hardware – the Mental Body.

But, have you ever wondered how the Biological Machine receives the instructions for its efficient functioning?

The Software

Please watch the below video from Sadhguru

In the above video, Sadhguru talks about how Prana can carry some amount of memory upon it. This Pranic Memory is the source of software or instructions for the functioning of the Physical Machine.

Let, us take an example from the modern world to understand it better. At present, users install Microsoft Windows and all other software directly into the computer’s hardware.

Instead, in future we may have Smart Electricity. This implies that we could utilize the memory embedded upon the electricity for passing software to the computer.

So, the same device could function differently depending upon what kind of software you embed upon the electricity that you supply to it.

In a similar manner, the human mechanism functions. The basic hardware or anatomy is the same for all human beings except a few Cosmetic Changes which is just a minute percentage of the genetic instructions or DNA.

Soul which is Consciousness & Prana, has Memory or Software of actions from Past Births as well as some Core Survival Software embedded upon it.

The software associates with the Physical Body during the time the womb develops it.

These memories or software make the body function and we call them Karmic Software. Therefore, another way of defining Karma is that it is MEMORY.

The breathtaking diversity that we see in the behaviour of human beings is because of some set of instructions or software that have become different due to actions in the material world and also from past births.

Karmic Software has a very sophisticated design. It organizes into layers, more or less like an operating system, with Linux being the closest one.

Human Mechanism: A Vehicle of the DIVINE

Human Mechanism is a Microcosmic unit of the larger Macrocosmos and there is a 1-1 correspondence between them. Watch the below video.

Let us understand why Human Mechanism is made the way it is and is a vehicle of the DIVINE Consciousness.

Mapping Consciousness and Humans

At first there was pure consciousness which is called SHI-VA (that which is not), the Universal Consciousness.

Then arose a desire to experience itself which it does by movement of MahaPrana or the Primal Energy or SHAKTI.

Similarly, the Human Mechanism is driven by Individual Consciousness or Soul. There is a desire to experience itself which is facilitated by movement of PRANA (a subset of MahaPrana).

Evolution of Human Being

By performing Yoga & Meditation Practices, we are trying to utilize and tame this Prana in the Microcosmic Unit of the human body.

This is done so that Kundalini Shakti, at the Mooladhara Chakra combines with SHI-VA at the Sahasrara Chakra. This leads to a state of SuperConsciousness.

This is what evolution of human being means which is anyway going to happen over next 2-3 million years.

By performing Yoga & Meditation, we are just speeding up this process of Human Evolution.  For example, 10 years of Kriya Yoga is equivalent to 1 million years of human evolution.

So, the Divine Consciousness wants to fully experience itself through the Superconscious state of a Human Being. Human Mechanism is a vehicle of the DIVINE.

Meditation and Karmic Memory

Sage Patanjali has revealed the Science of Yoga in 200 Sutras or Threads. The most important is “Chitta Vritta Nirodha which means “Cessation of Mental Modifications of Mind”.

This is also the Goal of Yoga. Thoughtless Mind is one of the advanced stages of Samadhi. This means it prompts Union of Individual Consciousness with the Universal Consciousness and ultimately Enlightenment.

This implies, ultimate goal of Yoga is annihilation of Karmic Memories. Because, as long as thoughts exists, in the mind, mental fluctuations will never cease to exist.

In other words, Spirituality is just getting out of the Karmic Memory Cycle.

To begin Meditation, first step is always Pratyahara or turning the senses inwards. This is important so that further accumulation of Karmic Memory from the external environment stops.

But, what about previously accumulated Karma? It is an uphill task to get rid of Karmic Memory from the PAST especially from Past Lives and is rarely possible for a person on his own.

For this reason, the role of a LIVE GURU becomes very important for a Spiritual Aspirant. Without a LIVE GURU, the real goal of YOGA which is to unite with the Universal Consciousness remains far fetched.

Please watch Sadhguru’s VIDEO for more clarity.

Cycle of Karmic Memory

We are connected to the outside world through our five senses which are Eyes, Ears, Tongue, Nose and Skin. For each input that we receive from our senses, there is a corresponding Chemical Reaction in our body.

It produces a fluctuation in our Mind. This in turn translates to Energy waves leaving an impact on Energy Body of the person.

The reverse is also true, any thought which comes in our Mind would prompt us to produce a Physical Action. It will also have an impact on the Energy Body.

The Physical action thus performed will again have an impact on the Mental and Energy Body of the person,. This implies accumulation of Karma never stops and the person will forever be caught in a Karmic Cycle.

Ultimately the accumulated Karma gets hardened in the three bodies. This presents an obstruction to the flow of Prana in the Bodies or Koshas .

Now, accumulated Karma in a person is not just due to Karmic Cycle. It is also due to Karma from Past Lives. The Karmas from Past Lives get transported into this life as the Soul finds a new Body.

To summarize, Karma is Memory Imprints of this life and the past lives on Quantum of Prana that flows in the body.

The Karmic Memories makes one person different from other person. It decides how Prana or the Life Energy will flow and behave in each person.

Sadhguru has explained why Prana behaves in a certain way in each person through an example of Smart Electricity in the following video.

Karma Is Memory

Karma is the most popular word in the world today and the most misunderstood as well.

The literal meaning of the word Karma is Action. Therefore, any activity in the Physical Body whether it is walking, eating, drinking constitutes Karma.

The body is doing Karma even at sleep. The physiological processes like pumping of heart, breathing etc. are continuously running to keep a person alive.

Thoughts that arise in the mind also constitute Karma as they are just fluctuations of the mind. Mind is doing Karma even at sleep as it is in an Unconscious state.

In Yoga, Mind is not just brain but has Four Parts — Ahamkara, Manas, Chitta and Buddhi.

Watch the below video from Swami SatyaNanda of Bihar School of Yoga.

The mental fluctuations that arise in the mind translate as Energy Waves in the Energy Body or Pranamaya Kosha.

This causes residual impact on the Energy Body. Thereby, causing obstruction to the flow of Prana in the entire Human Mechanism.

This would explain as to why Psychological Problems are often accompanied with Physical Ailments. Due to depletion of Prana, the person tends to become weaker over a period of time .

To summarize, Karma is the residual impact of the Actions and Thoughts on the Physical, Mental and Energy Body of a person.
